Q: What does intellectual disability, learning difficulties and adaptive functioning mean?

A:  Persons with intellectual disabilities or learning difficulties may experience or demonstrate difficulties in areas such as reasoning, problem-solving, planning, abstract thinking, judgment, academic learning and learning from experience.   Adaptive functioning refers to how well a person meets the standards of personal independence and social responsibility in one or more aspects of daily life activities, such as communication, social participation, functioning at school or at work, or personal independence at home or in community settings and parenting. 


Q: What does ParentsWithPromise do?
A: ParentsWithPromise is a service agency in DeKalb, IL that works specifically with adults with learning difficulties, intellectual disabilities and adaptive functioning concerns. We work closely with parents in this population through specialized groups, individual counseling an parent coaching services. ParentsWithPromise also provides services for the youth in the Northern Region of Illinois through Life Skills groups and Financial Literacy training (see PowerWithPeers) and for Pregnant and Parenting Teens.

Q: What services do you provide?

A: ParentsWithPromise provides services designed for each individual client and family. We provide such services as: Parenting Groups, Parent Coaching, Individual Counseling, Healthy relationship groups, Anti-Bullying groups, Life Skill groups, Transitioning Youth Groups, Seminars and Trainigs, and an array of support groups. 

Q: Where are you located, and what areas do you serve?

A: We are located at 810 South Fourth street in DeKalb, Illinois. If transportation is provided to our location, anyone in the state of Illinois is able to receive services at ParentsWithPromise.

Q: Do you travel for services?

A: ParentsWithPromise has the capability to travel throughout Northern Illinois for services dependent upon the referring agency and the families need. Please contact ParentsWithPromise for more information.

Q: What insurance do you accept?

A: ParentsWithPromise accepts several types of insurance and hold contracts with several family service agencies in the surrounding area. Please contact our office for further information.

Q: Do you provide counseling for children?

A: ParentsWithPromise is able to provide counseling services for children ages 3-18 dependent upon the individual and family needs. Please contact our office with further questions and information on other local resources for children.

Q: What do your services cost? Does ParentsWithPromise have a sliding scale?

A: Services at ParentsWithPromise vary in cost dependent upon the service requested and if there is a referring agency involved. ParentsWithPromise has a sliding fee scale with limited availability. Please contact our office to determine eligibility and find out more information on pricing.

Q: What are your hours?

A: ParentsWithPromise operates Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm unless otherwise noted. If you would like to contact our office after hours or on weekends, please leave us a detailed message and a call back number at 815.758.1358.

Q: Can you help me find other services?

A: ParentsWithPromise has compiled a community resource manual for the surrounding area available to all members of the community. Please contact our office to request a manual or for information on a specific resource request.
